Idle Land Transformed: Yissah Foundation Launches Agricultural Initiative

Nkhotakota, Malawi –

Yissah Foundation has transformed its previously idle land into a hub of agricultural productivity through the launch of a community-based farming initiative. This strategic endeavor, made possible with support from Yissah Logistics LLC and the Board of Directors, aims to promote food security, empower local communities, and make efficient use of land designated for the future secondary school.

The agricultural project began with the cultivation of maize and cassava—two of Malawi’s most essential food staples. With funding support, the Foundation purchased quality maize seeds, cassava stems, and fertilizers. Local laborers were engaged to carry out the planting, further contributing to the economic empowerment of households in the Chia area of Nkhotakota.

“This initiative reflects our belief that every resource counts, even before construction begins,” said a spokesperson from the Foundation. “The land was there, unused, and instead of letting it lie fallow, we saw an opportunity to grow food and uplift our surrounding community.”

The project site, which will eventually house Yissah Foundation Secondary School, now also serves as a model of productive land use. Beyond food production, the effort serves as a steppingstone toward integrating agricultural education into the school’s future curriculum.

Harvests from the project will be used to support food relief efforts and, in time, supply the school’s feeding programs. This dual-purpose approach—preparing for education while responding to current needs—is a hallmark of Yissah Foundation’s holistic development strategy.

Community members have praised the Foundation for its inclusive approach and vision. By combining practical initiatives with long-term educational goals, Yissah Foundation continues to build both physical and social infrastructure for a better future in Nkhotakota.
